Ex BSB team boss Colin Wright joins up with Colchester Kawasaki

Now there's a headline that will set tongues wagging in the BSB paddock - two of the most charismatic and experienced team managers in BSB joining forces. But it's not as it first suggests. Colin Wright isn't joining the inimitable MSS Colchester Kawasaki boss Nick Morgan; he's doing something you might expect him to have done many moons ago - he's taking his bike test! Yes, the most successful team manager in the history of the British Superbike Championship, Colin Wright, is fulfilling a long held ambition and aged 50, is finally taking the plunge. Having helped his riders to over 100 victories in what is judged to be the premier domestic motorcycle championship in the world, the former team manager has decided it is time to take to two wheels on the public highway for the very first time. "I'd competed in youth motocross on a Kawasaki KX125 as a kid but I never got round to getting my bike licence as my weekends have been someone busy over the past few years", joked Colin, who now lives and works in Kent. "The whole thing was accelerated at an impromptu birthday celebration recently with the offer of a loan of a bike from my old employers Kawasaki if I promised to knuckle down and pass my test." Choosing the training school at Kawasaki's BSB base, Colchester Kawasaki, Colin recently undertook the very first part of his journey towards a full motorcycle licence, Compulsory Basic Training. "It made a change to take orders for once, but I soon realised that if I concentrated and did exactly what my trainer said I could cross the first hurdle towards my licence. I have to say he was far more patient than I ever remember being when I was working with riders and I owe a debt to my trainer on the day, Rob, as well as Ian Stewart and all the guys at Colchester Kawasaki". Having successfully negotiated the cones and other obstacles in the special off-road tarmac training area next to the Colchester Kawasaki store, Colin had just enough time for a cup of hot, sweet tea and a cigarette before the open road beckoned. "I am so glad I paid attention all morning. All the processes I was taught were automatic by the time I went out on the KLX125 training school bike and I really enjoyed my first time on the road on a motorcycle. I'm delighted to say that, at the end of the day, Rob handed me my CBT certificate and explained the next part of my journey, the theory test." Having been a keen supporter of the Motorcycle Industry Association GetOn campaign since its inception, Colin is now one of its higher profile "converts" and, like the hundreds of others who have passed through two-wheel training schools recently, he has been well and truly bitten by the biking bug. "I've got to do my homework now for the theory test and then it is on to both parts of the practical test and, fingers crossed, my full motorcycle licence". Read article

GSE Racing Facing Withdrawal From British Superbikes In 2010

Source: BritishSuperbikeNews.co.uk - Thursday, 18th February 2010, 12:58 GMT

GSE Racing 2009 The reigning champion British Superbike team GSE Racing are today facing withdrawal from the British Superbike Championship of 2010 unless a sponsor is found before the end of the year. Towards the end of the season the team announced that their partnership with Wrigley’s Airwaves would be coming to an end after the years finale.  Since that time no suitable replacement has been found leaving the team without the necessary funding to compete in the 2010 season. Team Principle Darrell Healey said; “It is with great regret that we have had to issue the team with their notice of redundancy, with a view to withdrawing from the British Superbike Championship at the end of 2009.  We have enjoyed tremendously our time racing in the most competitive domestic superbike series in the world, and therefore this decision was not taken lightly.  Alongside Yamaha, we will be doing all we can to try and secure a partner in the remaining time available, and greatly hope we an return to once again successfully defend our championship title.” Team Manager Colin Wright added; “Everyone at GSE Racing is incredibly saddened that we may no longer be able to compete in the British Superbike Championship. We enjoyed our most successful season ever in 2009. Leon Camier and James Ellison were the only two riders to have finished every race in the points (barring Leon’s exclusion at Cadwell) and we enjoyed numerous double race wins and double one two’s on our way to first and second in the Championship standings. We were very much looking forward to continuing this success on into 2010 as we entered our second year in partnership with Yamaha, but unfortunately it looks like this will now not be. “I would like to take this opportunity to thank the whole team for their unrivalled dedication and hard work, our previous sponsors for their support, and of course the British Superbike fans.” Read article

GSE staff get redunancy notices as team hints at BSB withdrawal

Source: Insidebikes | Carole Nash - Monday, 28th December 2009, 15:09 GMT

Redundancy notices have been given to staff at GSE Racing at the British Superbikes Championship’s most successful team looks set to disband. Staff at the team have been informed that their jobs are at risk as the team continues to struggle to find a sponsor for the 2010 season. Airwaves Yamaha, who took the championship by storm in 2010 with 23 race victories from 26 last season, were hit with a setback that title-sponsor Wrigley’s would not continue their support of the team in 2010, ending a five-year association. The financial crisis, which has hit all forms of motorsport hard, has made it difficult for the team to find a new corporate backed and team boss Colin Wright has suggested that the team may not be able to compete next season. “Everyone at GSE Racing is incredibly saddened that we may no longer be able to compete in the British Superbike Championship. We enjoyed our most successful season ever in 2009,” said Wright. “Leon Camier and James Ellison were the only two riders to have finished every race in the points (barring Leon’s exclusion at Cadwell) and we enjoyed numerous double race wins and double one-twos on our way to first and second in the Championship standings. “We were very much looking forward to continuing this success on into 2010 as we entered our second year in partnership with Yamaha, but unfortunately it looks like this will now not be. “I would like to take this opportunity to thank the whole team for their unrivalled dedication and hard work, our previous sponsors for their support, and of course the British Superbike fans.” Read article

Ellison denies WSS switch

Ellison, who was in Portugal to support former AMA rival Ben Spies, was offered the opportunity to test the Yamaha R6 left vacant by Cal Crutchlow’s switch to World Superbikes and clocked times which, whilst not officially released, were described as “competitive with the top five race times”. But Ellison has dismissed suggestions that the test is an indication that he is to leave British Superbikes, with Yamaha still yet to confirm a WSS rider for 2010. “At the moment my plan is to stay with GSE Racing in BSB next season as I have a two year contract with the team, but we are waiting on a title sponsor,” he told the BSB website. “I have done my first year with GSE and finished second so for 2010 the aim is to come back with them and have a real stab at the title.” Ellison, who came second in the BSB championship to teammate Leon Camier, did however relish the opportunity to ride the World Championship winning bike. “It was awesome and a great opportunity for me to test Cal’s bike today,” added. “I had about an hour on track and in that time I was able to run the pace that the top five had at the weekend on race distance tyres without making any changes to Cal’s settings. “The last time I rode a Supersport bike was in 2002 and it has changed since then, it has loads more power now and you can wrestle it around and be more physical than you can on the Superbike. It is much lighter and reacts more to the movement and you have to keep it revving all the time, but it has some mega electronics and a great chassis. It was just a fantastic package. “I had gone to Portugal to watch the racing and see Ben (Spies); we raced together in AMA and we are good mates so I wanted to go and see him finish the job and catch up with a few people. I spoke to Laurens Klein Koerkamp who is the Yamaha Motor Europe Racing Manager over the weekend, as I knew him from before, and team manager Wilco Zeelenberg to see if I could have a test on the Supersport bike. “They had planned to test a couple of riders and I didn’t find out for definite until the end of the weekend, so I called and checked it was OK with Colin [Wright], GSE Racing team manager] and that is how it all happened. I borrowed Cal’s kit - his leathers, gloves and boots as he is the same size as me; it gave the photographers something to look out for as we were almost identical!” Read article
