Kiyonari on top at Brands

Ryuichi Kiyonari was the man to watch at Brands Hatch this afternoon, stealing pole position for tomorrow’s thrilling season opener. After making his way into the third session in the Roll for Pole battle, Kiyonari proved to have the upperhand as he rode his HM Plant Honda to top spot ahead of tomorrow’s first race of 2010. Tommy Hill followed the British Superbike regular into second, while Alastair Seeley recorded the third quickest time in the final eight minute shoot out. Dan Linfoot, riding the Motorpoint Yamaha will starting from fourth, joining Seeley, his fellow BSB rookie on the front row of the grid. Josh Brookes roared to the fifth quickest time, just ahead of Tommy Bridewell, Michael Laverty and Yukio Kagayama. The final two spots in the top ten were filled by Stuart Easton and James Ellison - two riders who occupied the front of the field on many occasions during 2009. BSB expert, James Ellison, was unable to see the track in the final eight minute session due to a technical problem at the end of the second qualifying stint, and so will start tomorrow’s first of two races from tenth on the grid. The Mirror.co.uk BSB-Evo class was dominated by Steve Brogan, with setting the fastest time in 16th, while Craig Fitzpatrick and David Johnson weren’t far behind.   Tomorrow is shaping up to be an extremely exciting battle to the chequered flag, with two chances to see your BSB heroes in action. Each rider’s second fastest qualifying times will determine their starting positions for race two, meaning the second race could be very different to the first. Something to look forward to. Mason tries hand at martial arts ahead of new season

Mirror.co.uk Privateer’s Cup champion Guy Mason has taken a new approach as he prepares for the 2010 British Superbike Champion, putting himself through a brutal martial arts training regime. As he looks to achieve peak condition before the start of the season, the MSS Colchester Kawasaki rider checked himself into the Ultimate Training Centre in Erdington, Birmingham where was put through endurance training and martial arts sparring by British cage fighter and martial arts expert Vaughan Lee. And Mason was pleased with what he gained from the experience as he looks to gain that all important physical edge this season. “I’ve really been put through the mill over the winter with a sustained programme of endurance from some of the toughest people I’ve ever met down at the UTC,” he said. “I’ve also learned some important techniques from these guys like using full focus at times of crisis and also how to recover and bounce back quickly. They have to come back from injuries all the time whilst fast recovery from accidents is so important in our sport. It’s pointless moaning about the weather, if anything it’s made me more determined in the gym and I just can’t wait for the season to begin!” And Vaughan was pleased with what he saw, pledging to back his pupil all the way in 2010. “It’s been interesting working with Gary as we’ve concentrated on keeping him light for the bike and built up his grip strength, core and endurance, so he should be one of the fittest guys on the grid,” he claimed. “He’s a good ambassador for the gym and his racing background means he listens and puts things to immediate use. We’re all behind him and will try and get to as many races as possible.” Read article
