Valentino Rossi: “I Want To Race In Superbikes!”

Source: MotoMatters.com | Kropotkin Thinks - ... that some manufacturers are more equal than others - Friday, 23rd July 2010, 14:16 GMT

Valentino Rossi's future has been dominating the news now for weeks, if not months, with all the talk being of Rossi's impending switch to Ducati. But lost in all this talk of next year is Valentino Rossi's longer term future, and what he will do when he retires from MotoGP. It has widely been assumed by both media and fans that Rossi will make the transition to four wheels after racing on two, with Ferrari making no secret of their wish to retain the Italian, even going so far as to hint at the possibility of running a third car in Formula One for the Italian legend. If Rossi decided against Formula One, there was always the World Rally Championship, as rallying is Rossi's other great passion. But recent indications are that retiring from MotoGP may not see the end of Valentino Rossi's life on two wheels. In an interview with Italian veteran journalist Paolo Scalera in the sports daily Corriere dello Sport, Rossi was asked to imagine it was 25 years from now, and he is looking back at his career, and in his imaginary future career, Rossi talked about rejecting F1 in favor of going racing in World Superbikes. His reasoning was simple and clear: "Bikes are for racing, cars are for fun," Rossi told the Corriere dello Sport, adding weight to the possibility ofa future switch to the rival series once he has completed his objective of beating Giacomo Agostini's records in MotoGP. read more Read article

Bikers Classics rocks Spa

Bikers’ Classics at Spa in Belgium is an annual celebration of Grand Prix motorcycle racing. This year saw a seemingly endless list of champions, wonderful bikes, a perfect Spa Francorchamps circuit, a passionate audience; those were the ingredients of another great meeting. All the promised world champions were present, including 15 times champ Giacomo Agostini, and happy to take the chance to ride the legendary Francorchamps circuit once again. Apart from that they met huge numbers of fans. Bikers’ Classics first timer Marco Lucchinelli entertained the crowds and his former rivals with his jokes and outgoing personality – it was as if nothing had changed since the 80s – Marco having a quick smoke before getting on one of collector Steve Wheatman’s Suzuki factory racers. “I’m enjoying myself immensely. The whole atmosphere is so relaxed and I like that.” commented the Italian star. On the track Steve Baker and Christian Sarron became entangled in a dramatic battle, still competitive as ever. As always, the Francorchamps paddock was transformed into a giant reunion party. The sidecar riders were the centre of attention of this year’s Bikers’ Classics and the spotlights shone brightly on racers from different decades; rivals like Steve Webster, Alain Michel, Egbert Streuer met again after many years, it immediately turned into a group hug with stories about the good old days going round. Veteran Stan Dibben ( aged 83), enjoyed the attention, as did Max Deubel, Rolf Steinhausen, Ralf Engelhardt and legendary constructor Dieter Busch. As well as former GP stars in action, Bikers’ Classics played host to a 4-hour endurance race, classic machines on show and a late night gig by rock band Classic 21. Moto Guzzi owners from across Europe gathered for for a once-in-a-lifetime parade around the evocative Spa circuit. The ninth edition of Bikers’ Classics is already pencilled in for 2011. BMF show draws 60,000 crowd

Source: Insidebikes | Carole Nash » Bike News - Wednesday, 19th May 2010, 8:30 GMT

The 50th Anniversary bmf show saw thousands turn out over the weekend for one of the best bmf shows of recent years. As Europe’s largest outdoor motorcycle show, the bmf is something of a barometer for the health of motorcycle shows in general. The bmf’s new event organisers the Mulberry group were determined to pull out all the stops to make this a show to remember and they succeeded big time. With an improved layout, more manufacturers and top-line traders plus fantastic sunny weather, the bmf claim that over 60,000 people attended the show weekend. With the official presence of BMW, Suzuki, Kawasaki, Triumph, Norton, Victory, Aprilia, Moto Guzzi, plus Ducati, there were plenty of new bikes to look at and test rides to be had on BMW, Suzuki and Kawasaki. Norton were there for the first time and Norton Sales Manager and top BSB racer Chris Walker, having sold four of the stunning new Nortons over the weekend, was well pleased commenting that “The bmf show has everything going for it with good organisation, a good crowd and good security. It’s a great place to be and to be seen.” Richard Spies of Victory Motorcycles, was also well pleased with the weekend. With a prime corner position in the newly defined manufacturer’s area Richard said it had been a “great show with a great crowd.” BMW, currently riding high in the sales charts was similarly pleased with the weekend. “The bmf show is good for us with plenty of serious enquiries from serious enthusiasts” said BMW Marketing Manager Tony Jakeman. On a completely different level, thousands come to the bmf show on a shopping expedition to buy their kit for the new season so smaller traders too reported brisk business. Chris Hawley of Baglux, a regular for the past 25 years and just one of the 300 traders on site, said that business had been good and that “There was a buzz about the place again that had been missing in recent years.”  while Paul Burdass from Fat Skeleton said: “We’ve had our busiest Peterborough bmf ever in terms of revenue, reversing the general trend we’ve seen at both indoor & outdoor events over the past year.” Someone really happy was Norman Ford, the winner of the bmf’s Win-A-Bike prize draw. Stunned that he had won, Norman is yet to choose which bike he wants to take home from either a Yamaha XVS1300 ‘Midnight Star’, a Suzuki GSXR600 or a Honda CB1000R. Another winner on the day was David Light who having joined the bmf over the weekend, found that he was also the lucky winner of a Giacomo Agostini replica helmet in the bmf’s special membership promotion. Commenting, bmf spokesman Jeff Stone said, “This really was an excellent show. I’ve run the press office at most of the bmf shows since 1977 and this was one of the best. It wasn’t as packed as some, but in a way it was better for it and given the current economic climate, we did amazingly well. To be honest, the bmf show had lost its way over the last few years, but due credit to the Mulberry Group, their input means it’s now back on track!” Read article

Freddie Spencer’s Championship Bikes For Sale

Source: MotoMatters.com | Kropotkin Thinks - ... that the winter is now officially over for racing fans - Wednesday, 10th March 2010, 12:40 GMT

Ask some of the veterans of the MotoGP paddock who the greatest racer of all time was, and you'll get a fairly short list of names, usually including Valentino Rossi, Giacomo Agostini, Kenny Roberts, Eddie Lawson and Kevin Schwantz. But the answer to that question is almost always followed up by the words "And then there's Freddie Spencer, of course..." Spencer's career was cut short by a wrist injury, but before he was forced to retire, the young American shocked the world by being the only man to win both the 500cc and 250cc World Championships in the same year. Fast Freddie was precocious, sensitive and blindingly, mind-bogglingly fast. Since retiring from racing, Spencer's fortunes have been very mixed. The Louisiana native ran a successful riding school and was the motorcycle racing commentator for the US SpeedTV channel, but both of those ventures have gone sour. Spencer's riding school was forced to shut down at the end of 2008, after financial problems saw the instructors go unpaid and the bikes repossessed. Spencer's commentary work also dried up, with Daytona legend Scott Russell taking his place in the commentary booth. read more Read article

Rossi wins while Lorenzo crashes – Brno rider claims

Source: HighRevs.net - MotoGP news - Tuesday, 23rd February 2010, 23:51 GMT

Valentino Rossi stormed to the fifth victory of the season, leading race from pole position and wining battle with Jorge Lorenzo, who crashed with five laps remaining. MotoGP victory nymber 102 was also 160th Rossis podium finish, which placed him in front of Giacomo Agostini to top the all-time podium list. More important for Rossi, he is now 50 points clear of Lorenzo in championship chase. Dani Pedrosa, who was briefly second in opening part of the race, was not able to follow Rossi and Lorenzo and finished race in lonely 2nd place after Lorenzo crashed. Contract time once again inspired Toni Elias to grab last step of the podium, after race-long battle with Dovizioso, who again finished in his trademark 4th place. Read article
