Dani Pedrosa stormed to his third win of the season at Indianapolis today, to reduce the points gap to championship leader Jorge Lorenzo. After starting on the second row of the grid, Pedrosa powered through to the front, when a fastest lap lead him to second place. After shadowing pole sitter Ben Spies for the first few laps, Pedrosa made his move for the lead on lap seven, from where he never looked back. Despite starting on the front row of the grid, Lorenzo dropped to fifth during the opening laps, however he managed to claw his way back to third, gaining another strong finish. This marked an unusual occasion for the championship leader, with this being the first time all season he has finished out of the top two, however it hasn’t dampened his title hopes. Valentino Rossi fought through to a fourth place finish after starting seventh, having made the best of a difficult weekend. Fellow Italian Andrea Dovizioso crossesd the line in fifth, just behind Rossi. After starting on the front row of the grid for today’s race Nicky Hayden dropped to sixth place at home, to give the American fans something extra to celebrate. The bottom half of the top ten saw Marco Simoncelli soar to seventh place, while Alvaro Bautista finished eighth. The final two spots in the top ten were filled by Aleix Espargaro and Hector Barbera, with the duo finishing ninth and tenth, respectively. With a number of riders falling by the wayside the remaining three finishing positions were awarded to Loris Capirossi in eleventh, Hiroshi Aoyama twelfth and Randy De Puniet thirteenth. Mika Kallio, Colin Edwards, Casey Stoner and Marco Melandri were all forced into retirement, with various incidents and issues ending their respective races. Lorenzo is now sixty-eight points clear at the top of the championship standings, with 251 points to Pedrosa’s 183 points. Dovizioso is third in the points table, with Stoner fourth and Rossi fifth, despite missing a few rounds due to a broken leg. Read article

Aoyama To Return To Racing At Indianapolis

Source: MotoMatters.com | Kropotkin Thinks - ... that finally the whole charade is over. - Monday, 23rd August 2010, 18:58 GMT

Hiroshi Aoyama's rookie season in MotoGP has not been easy. The last ever 250cc World Champion entered MotoGP in a brand new team on a satellite Honda and had spent his time slowly getting up to speed, all the while struggling with a wrist problem. Then, just as the Interwetten Honda rider seemed to be getting to grips with the new class, fate dealt him a cruel blow in the form of a Sunday morning cold-tire highside at Silverstone for the British Grand Prix. Aoyama fractured his T12 vertebra, and was out for at least three months. Rejecting surgery, Aoyama decided to let the fracture heal naturally. Speaking to MotoMatters.com at Brno on Saturday, Aoyama explained that the alternative would have been to have the vertebra above and below fused together, and though that would have allowed the Interwetten Honda rider to return to action more quickly, it would also have permanently restricted his range of motion, complicating the process of learning to ride. Aoyama's decision not to have surgery was vindicated two days later, when the Japanese rider tested the Interwetten Honda RC212V once again, and immediately set times faster than Alex de Angelis, the rider who had been drafted in to replace Aoyama during his absence. read more Read article
