Another race and another victory for Jorge Lorenzo the young Spaniard extend his lead further at the top of the championship table, at Laguna Seca today. As the race began, Lorenzo enjoyed a good start, however closest rival Dani Pedrosa had a stronger start, soaring around the outside of him and Stoner and straight into the lead. Stoner slotted into second, while local hero Ben Spies jumped up to third. After being muscled out, Lorenzo soon found his rhythm and started to crawl his way back to the front. By the end of lap one he had fought his way back to third, demoting Spies down the order. A few laps down the road and it was Stoner who was now under threat, when a storming Yamaha slipped by to steal his second place away from him. By this point, Pedrosa had started pulling out a lead at the front, leaving Lorenzo to play catch up. Further back Marco Melandri and Marco Simoncelli were enjoying a tough in-house scrap, as the teammates battled it out for eighth place. Melandri would later win this battle, when Simoncelli’s race ended abruptly in the gravel. With twenty-one lasp to go all attentions focused on the front of the field, as race leader Pedrosa slid off into the gravel and immediately out of the race. Now with a clear track in front of him, Lorenzo inherited the race lead and began edging out a further gap back to Stoner. While the top two in their own private scrap, Andrea Dovizioso, in third, came under pressure from a charging Valentino Rossi. Despite it being his second race back after breaking his leg, the reigning champion soon forgot about his injury to focus on stealing third from Dovizioso. Five laps from the chequered flag, Dovizioso came under attack from a surging Rossi, with the duo running nose to tail for the final podium position. Rossi’s determination paid off as he eventually skipped passed the Repsol Honda rider. As the chequered flag fell it was Lorenzo there to receive it first, with Stoner behind in second. Stoner also set the fastest lap of the race, which he did on lap four. Rossi rode to a remarkable third place finish, returning to the podium after breaking his leg just seven weeks ago. Dovizioso just managed to hold onto fourth ahead of the American battle, with Nicky Hayden beating his local rivals, Ben Spies and Colin Edwards. Melandri crossed the line eighth, behind the American trio, with Mika Kallio and Loris Capirossi completing the top ten. The two remaining finishers came in the form of Roger Lee Hayden, Nicky’s brother who was replacing the injured Randy De Puniet, and Alex De Angelis. With five retirements there were only twelve finishers this time out. The next round of the MotoGP championship takes place at the Brno circuit in the Czech republic, on the 15th August following a summer break for the series.     Read article

Lorenzo takes fourth consecutive pole

Source: Insidebikes | Carole Nash » Bike News - Saturday, 17th July 2010, 22:01 GMT

Jorge Lorenzo recorded his fourth consecutive pole position at the Sachsenring, Germany this afternoon, despite his Yamaha M1 coating the track in oil. With twenty-five minutes of the qualifying hour remaining, the session was shown the red flag due to Lorenzo’s Yamaha sharing its oil with the tarmac. As a result of the spillage, Ben Spies slid off of his Monster Yamaha Tech 3 machine, leaving his empty bike in the path of an unsuspecting Randy De Puniet. After colliding with the Yamaha, De Puniet was taken to the medical centre, where his right leg was x-rayed. Fortunately he was deemed uninjured, and is hopefully of taking his place on the grid tomorrow. With the session resumed, Casey Stoner was able to secure the second fastest time around the impressive circuit, with one of his best chances of the season for a victory coming this weekend. Meanwhile, Lorenzo’s nearest championship rival, Dani Pedrosa completes the front row with a third place start. The second row of the grid kicks off with Andrea Dovizioso setting the fourth quickest time, with the returning Valentino Rossi in fifth. After breaking his leg just six weeks ago, Rossi has proven his fitness to ensure he made his way back to the grid. Alongside Rossi, and completing the second row, is Hector Barbera. Despite his drama with the oil, De Puniet set the seventh fastest time, while Marco Simoncelli, Aleix Espargaro and Marco Melandri complete the top ten. Mika Kallio, Colin Edwards and Ben Spies narrowly missed out on a top ten spot, and will be starting eleventh, twelfth and thirteenth, respectively. MotoGP, Qualifying Positions, Sachsenring: Pos. Lorenzo on top in Barcelona

Source: Insidebikes | Carole Nash » Bike News - Sunday, 4th July 2010, 16:23 GMT

Jorge Lorenzo impressed the home crowd at Barcelona this afternoon, taking another MotoGP victory at a sun soaked Catalunya circuit. A good start saw the Spaniard fly away at the start, however he briefly lost the lead as a fast starting Dani Pedrosa launched into the lead from his second row starting position. However, Pedrosa’s successful start was short lived when he ran wide around turn one, handing the lead back to Lorenzo. With the championship leader heading the field, he soon came under pressure from Casey Stoner and Andrea Dovizioso. Keen to take the position from Lorenzo, both Stoner and Dovizioso were hot on his heels, trying to pressure the FIAT Yamaha rider. After running wide at the first corner, Pedrosa initially dropped to ninth place, however was soon fighting his way back through the pack. Just two laps into the race, the Spaniard was already up to fifth place, eager to make an impression on his home crowd. By the fifth lap the action was really picking up, as Dovizioso dived passed Lorenzo and into the lead. Just seconds later Lorenzo shot back passed him, regaining the prominent position. From here Lorenzo and his pursuer, Dovizioso, soon edged away at the front. Meanwhile, Pedrosa had worked his way through to third, with Stoner right on his tail. Randy De Puniet just missed out on the fight for a podium spot, when a charging Pedrosa and Stoner edged him out. As the race progressed, the race at the front was just as hit as the weather. However, with just eleven laps to go the drama kicked in. First of all Marco Simoncelli fell foul of the bad luck, when he was forced to retire. Shortly afterwards on the same lap, Dovizioso crashed off, easing the pressure for Lorenzo. The Repsol Honda rider was able to rejoin the race, however proceeded with caution with a potentially damaged bike. As the chequered flag signalled the end of yet another edge-of-your seat race, it was Lorenzo who made his mark in front of a home crowd to extend his lead at the top of the table. With the absence of his Repsol Honda teammate, Pedrosa made it a Spanish one-two finishing second, with a fiesty Stoner in third, unable to find a way through before the flag. De Puniet brought his LCR Honda home in a lonely fourth, spending the majority of his race running on his own. The battle behind was a close one, with Alvaro Bautista finishing fifth, just managing to fight off advances from Ben Spies in sixth, finishing as top American. Loris Capirossi crossed the line in seventh, with Nicky Hayden fighting through to eighth. Marco Melandri finished just behind his former teammate in ninth, with Hector Barbera tenth. Colin Edwards and Mika Kallio just missed out on a top ten placing, meanwhile Dovizioso managed to climb back to a fourteenth place finish. Wataru Yoshikawa, replacing the injured Valentino Rossi, finished fifteenth. Lorenzo now has 165 points at the top of the championship table, with Pedrosa second with 113 points and Dovizioso third with 91 points. The next round of the season is at Sachsenring in Germany, on the 18th July, where Lorenzo will be expecting tough competition from the pursuing Pedrosa. Read article
