JOHN MCGUINNESS MOVES CLOSER TO JOEY DUNLOP’S OUTRIGHT RECORD WITH VICTORY IN ROYAL LONDON 360 SUPER
Source: Latest News Articles from ACU.org.uk - Wednesday, 6th June 2012, 9:53 GMTJohn McGuinness made it TT win number nineteen when he led the Royal London 360 Superstock race from start to finish. After numerous podiums, it was his first win in the class and he beat Michael Dunlop by 7.8s, the Northern Irishman overhauling fellow countryman Ryan Farquhar in the closing stages of the race. The evening start time of 6.30pm saw perfect conditions around the Mountain Course although the sun that had caused problems during practice again proved awkward for riders. McGuinness blasted away on the Padgetts Honda and led through Glen Helen but, as with the morning’s Monster Energy Supersport race, it was again tight and his lead over second placed James Hillier was just half a second. Gary Johnson was a further eight tenths of a second back with Farquhar right on his tail, the gap between the two only 0.03s. As the lap progressed, it was clear it was becoming a fight between McGuinness and Farquhar and as they flashed across the line for the first time, the Morecambe man narrowly led but it was close - the gap between the two a negligible 0.17s. Guy Martin on the Tyco Suzuki was up to third as the morning’s Supersport winner Bruce Anstey, Michael Rutter and Hillier completed the top six. Dunlop, meanwhile, was down in eighth after a slow first lap. At Glen Helen second time around, there was still only 0.3s in it but at Ramsey, McGuinness eked out a 2.88s lead and it appeared that he was just beginning to edge away. However, fuel problems meant he had to nurse the bike home on the run down the Mountain but, nevertheless, a lap of 128.806mph gave him a near four second lead coming into the pit stop. Anstey had now moved into third and, with a 128mph+ lap, Dunlop was up to fourth pushing Martin, who changed a tyre at his stop, down to fifth with Rutter now in sixth. Powering around the third lap, McGuinness’ advantage continued to build and all eyes were now focused on the battle for second. Dunlop had overhauled Anstey and was within eight seconds of fellow Kawasaki man Farquhar. Martin and Hillier were still in fifth and sixth. At Glen Helen for the final time, McGuinness’ lead was up to 14.6s whilst the gap between Farquhar and Dunlop was now down to 5.9s. Indeed, Dunlop was putting a superb lap, which would eventually be 129.253mph, the fastest of the race, and at Ramsey the deficit was down to half a second. With Farquhar suffering an oil leak, he had to slightly reduce his pace and that, combined with Dunlop’s effort, meant that Dunlop edged ahead on the final Mountain climb. McGuinness, wary of the fuel problem from earlier, used his head and rode slightly cautiously over the final few miles to take his second win of the week by just under eight seconds. Dunlop’s 129mph lap saw him get his first podium of the week. It was also the first finish of the week for the KMR Kawasaki man, less than five seconds behind Dunlop. Anstey, Martin and Hillier took the next three places with Rutter, Gary Johnson, Dan Stewart and Cameron Donald completing the top ten. The results mean that McGuinness has gone back to the top of the TT Championship with 63 points to Anstey’s 54 and Donald’s 46. Meanwhile, Stewart was again the lead privateer and he has opened up a healthy lead in the Privateer’s Championship with 63 points compared to second placed Stefano Bonetti’s 36. All eyes will now be on Wednesday’s second Supersport Race and while John McGuinness will not start favourite in the 600cc class, he cannot be ruled out on this form. A number of leading riders currently empty handed will be looking to make their mark on this year’s meeting with Cameron Donald and the Dunlop brothers in particular keen to record their first victories this year while Bruce Anstey will be hoping to add to his Supersport 1 Race victory earlier in the day. Padgett delighted with BSB success
Source: Insidebikes | Carole Nash » BSB - Monday, 16th April 2012, 6:19 GMTClive Padgett could not hide his delight as he saw Ian Lowry ride to his and the team’s first ever win in British Superbikes. Lowry’s victory in race two at Thruxton was his first in BSB and the first ever for Padgett Honda – a family run team owned and managed by Clive Padgett, since it’s return to the British Superbike championship. Clive previously led the team to wins in the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and 00s both in the British classes and on the international road race scene, with the team last winning the British title in its previous guise in 1986 ahead of the factory contenders before finishing runner up the following season. The team returned to the Superbike class in 2001 but with riders out injured the Padgetts Honda team missed out on success and then ran riders in the Supersport and Superstock classes. This season, the Batley-based team returned to the premier class and in only the second race of the season returned to the top step of the podium – delighting the owner. “We have been on the pace this season and what can I say, we are still learning,” Padgett told the official BSB website. “This is our first year back in Superbike and we have no data to work with so we are picking up everything as we go along. “We are a family team; we have a crew that have been with us for a while and we keep building – our line-up includes a postman, a builder and me! Full credit to the whole team and the reception we have had has been fantastic. It was just ace; we were not expecting it and full credit to Ian. I think if it hadn’t been for Luca getting a slow puncture in the race he could have also been up there in the top five. “It feels great, we have always come racing to win so this is just what we had hoped for after a winter of hard work from the whole Padgetts ‘family’.” Read article
Lowry and Brookes take control
Source: Insidebikes | Carole Nash » BSB - Sunday, 15th April 2012, 17:35 GMTIan Lowry and Josh Brookes shared the spoils at a chilly Thruxton today, after two thrilling races saw a number of changes for position throughout. As race one got underway it was pole sitter and reigning Champion Tommy Hill who leapt into the lead. As the field toured their way around the opening few laps, Hill found himself harried by the charging Michael Rutter, as second place started Ian Lowry slipped to third. Alex Lowes, having started further back, outgunned those originally ahead of him to jump up to fourth place. Wasting no time at all to leader Hill, Lowry made his way back to second place, as he started to chase down leader Hill. Before long the top two managed to break away from the chasing pack, as they entered a private race for the top spot. Behind, the action was hotter than ever, with many of the regular front runners mounting a charge through the field after disappointing qualifying sessions. The likes of Shane Byrne, Michael Laverty and Josh Brookes found their way towards the sharp end of the pack, as positions began to swap and change. Sadly before long it was time to call an early end for Michael Rutter, as the MSS Bathams Kawasaki rider was forced to slowly make his way back to the pits on just lap nine of twenty. Back at the front, Lowry began to match Hill movement for movement as he mirrored his way around the Thruxton circuit. With just three laps to go Lowry saw his opportunity to take advantage of the struggling Hill, as he slid passed for that all important number one spot. After securing a first front row start for the Padgetts Honda outfit yesterday, Lowry scored a first win for himself in race one, much to the delight of an ecstatic team. After struggling with tyres for the closing stages, Hill was able to hang onto second place by the end, whilst Josh brookes completed the podium following a storming rider to third place. Brake problems failed to deny Byrne a strong finish as he rode to fourth place, ahead of the recovering Stuart Easton and Michael Laverty. Brands Hatch race winner Jon Kirkham finished the first of today’s two races in seventh place, with Luca Scassa, James Westmoreland and Graeme Gowland completing the top ten. A number of changes for some riders for the second race saw Hill switch his tyre compound, in a bid to have a more race long friendly tyre beneath him. As the race got underway, it was Hill again who stormed into the lead, as race one winner Lowry slotted into second place. Before long however, a charging Byrne dislodge Lowry from his second place perch, before engaging in a race long tussle with Hill. BSB debutant Freddy Foray fell from his Quattro Plant Kawasaki shortly into this second outing, causing him to earn a suspected dislocated shoulder. As the wreckage of his fallen bike was cleared Michael Rutter again began to slow, as he made his way back to the pits yet again. After touring nose to tail with Hill, Byrne soon made a lunge for the lead, which saw him move to the head of the field. Lowry again closed to the gap to second placed Hill, however after a brief run off the track he was left with some time to make up. In a bid to bank a strong finish, Stuart Easton locked onto the back of Lowry’s Padgetts Honda, before the pair caught the battle for the lead yet again. As the final laps approached it was all change at the head of the field. Hill managed to briefly reclaim the number one spot; however a storming performance from the charging Josh Brookes saw a fierce battle unfold on the final lap of the race. Unable to hold him off any longer, Brookes moved into the lead, from where he took the chequered flag. Hill held on for second place, whilst Byrne kick started his season with a third place finish. Despite struggle with his recovery, Stuart Easton managed a storng fourth place finish, ahead of race one winner Lowry and Scassa in sixth. Kirkham held on for another seventh place, with Alex Lowes, James Westmoreland and Noriyuki Haga rounding out the top ten. A strong performance at Truxton means Lowry is now at the top of the championship standings with 49 points, ahead of Brookes on 47 points. The next round takes place at Oulton Park over the 5th-7th May. Read article
