Carlos Checa secured provisional pole during the first qualifying session for World Superbikes at the Nurburgring, heading up another fleet of Ducatis on the front row. Ducati's domination was only broken by Troy Corser, who put his BMW S1000RR between Checa and the remainder of the Althea Ducati and Xerox Ducati teams. Michel Fabrizio took 3rd spot for the factory team, while Checa's teammate Shane Byrne took the final spot on the provisional front row. Championship leader Max Biaggi put his Alitalia Aprilia into 6th, while his main rival, Alstare Suzuki's Leon Haslam, could manage only the 11th fastest time. According to one report on the Dutch website Racesport.nl, Leon Camier fractured his right wrist in a crash, and will take no further part in the weekend's action. Results: Read article

2010 Nurburgring WSBK FP1 Result – Biaggi Edges The Ducati Hordes

Source: MotoMatters.com | Kropotkin Thinks - ... that Ducati out of WSBK is almost as big as Rossi to Ducati - Friday, 3rd September 2010, 11:50 GMT

The two days of practice that the Ducati team had at Mugello earlier this week appears to have paid off, and not just for Michel Fabrizio and Noriyuki Haga. The top of the timesheets was awash with Ducatis during the first session of free practice at the Nurburgring, with four of them in the top five positions. But it was not a Ducati in the very top spot, Max Biaggi setting the fastest time on the Alitalia Aprilia, and looking in good shape to lock down the World Superbike title as the series enters its final stages. Fabrizio was 2nd fastest, and just over five hundredths off Biaggi, while Althea Ducati's Carlos Checa interposed himself between Fabrizio and Haga in 4th. Places 5 through 8 were taken by the British contingent. Althea Ducati's Shane Byrne was the fastest Brit, ahead of Ten Kate Honda's Johnny Rea and Sterilgarda Yamaha's Cal Crutchlow in 7th. Championship contender Leon Haslam could only manage the 8th fastest time on the Alstare Suzuki, nearly two thirds of a second slower than Biaggi. Results: read more Read article

Crutchlow Closing In On Tech 3 Deal

Source: MotoMatters.com | Kropotkin Thinks - ... that Ducati out of WSBK is almost as big as Rossi to Ducati - Thursday, 2nd September 2010, 16:16 GMT

The return of a British MotoGP draws ever nearer. Cal Crutchlow has been linked to a MotoGP ride for several months now, but the Englishman now looks set to finalize the deal in the next couple of weeks, with an announcement possibly coming as early as this weekend at Misano. Talks are expected to take place here in Misano to settle the last few details with Yamaha bosses, but a deal now looks to be certain. Crutchlow is so sure of securing the deal that he has broken off talks with World Superbike teams, and is focused on switching to MotoGP with the Monster Tech 3 Yamaha squad, MotoMatters.com understands. An announcement by the Sterilgarda Yamaha rider is now merely a formality. Crutchlow has made no secret of his desire to move up to MotoGP. The Englishman came close to signing a Moto2 deal with Fausto Gresini in the middle of last year, while Crutchlow was still racing World Supersport, but Yamaha held him to the second year of his two-year deal, which saw Crutchlow join the Sterilgarda Yamaha team in World Superbikes. Crutchlow has an option to stay with Yamaha's WSBK squad, but has decided to turn it down for a shot in MotoGP with Tech 3. read more Read article

Haslam set to go for it in Germany

Source: WORLDSBK.COM | NEWS - Thursday, 2nd September 2010, 11:11 GMT

There are no prizes for guessing what Leon Haslam (photo, on Silverstone grid with Red Arrows flying officers) and his entire Suzuki Alstare team will be aiming for on raceday at the Nürburgring - get ahead of championship leader Max Biaggi and his factory Aprilia Alitalia machine. He is currently 60 points behind the Italian rider, with six individual races left to run. Haslam has good recent experience of the German circuit, having posted two strong finishes there when riding a private Honda. His team-mate Sylvain Guintoli has never raced at this German circuit, another circuit new to him in his rookie WSB year. Haslam, a three time race winner this year, he has waited long enough to get back into action, and has his sights set on a double order of top three finishes. "Last year, I managed a sixth and a fifth on a privateer bike, so I am looking forward to this year's round and challenging for the podium in both races," said Leon. "For sure I would like to win both races and put pressure on Max, but there are a lot of good riders and good bikes out there and it's not going to be an easy weekend. But, I wouldn't be out there if I didn't like the battle and I get a real buzz mixing it with the rest of the top riders. We've had a good, long break and although I have been training hard and doing a lot of riding, mainly off-road, there is nothing like being on the track and racing flat out. All I can do is the best I can, beat Max in both races and hope he gets a couple of poor results." For Frenchman Guintoli, the circuit in the Eifel Mountains of Germany is a puzzle, but one he hopes to enjoy solving. "I didn't race at the Nürburgring last year, so this will be my first time there on a Superbike," he stated. "I have definitely been happier these past few races and feel I now know a lot more about World Superbikes then at the start of the season. I know I say it a lot, but this series is so competitive and the smallest of margins can make such big differences. I have been keeping fit during the long break and cannot wait to be at the racetrack again and get back on my Suzuki Alstare GSX-R1000. As usual, my aim is to qualify well, be in a good place on the grid and then fight for the podium." Read article
